Welcome to The Living Year

There is a quiet wisdom that unfolds when we begin paying attention to the seasons.

Long before there were calendars filled with appointments, before childhood became hurried by schedules and endless activities, people looked to the earth as their guide. They noticed the first crocus pushing through frozen ground, the ripening of apples in late summer, the returning geese, the shortening days, and the first lantern glowing against an autumn sky. The rhythms of the natural world shaped the rhythms of daily life, and in doing so, gently shaped the lives of children.

The Living Year was born from a longing to return to that way of living.

Not by stepping backward into the past, but by reclaiming something timeless.

This publication is an invitation to slow down.

To notice.

To wonder.

To remember that childhood is not a race to be won, but a landscape to be lovingly explored.

Here, we believe that the changing seasons are among our greatest teachers. Each month carries its own gifts, its own work, and its own quiet invitation. Autumn teaches courage and gratitude. Winter invites stillness and reverence. Spring awakens hope and possibility. Summer reminds us to delight in beauty, abundance, and belonging.

Children naturally live within these rhythms. When we learn to notice them ourselves, we begin creating homes and classrooms that feel deeply rooted, peaceful, and alive.

The Living Year is inspired by the rich traditions of Waldorf education, seasonal living, and the enduring wisdom carried through stories, handcrafts, festivals, and the natural world. It is also shaped by a simple belief: children flourish when surrounded by beauty, meaningful work, living stories, and unhurried time.

Throughout the year, you’ll find reflections on the seasons, original stories, puppet plays, storytelling inspiration, handwork projects, nature table ideas, seasonal celebrations, and gentle guidance for creating rhythms that nourish both children and the adults who care for them.

You won’t find endless checklists or pressure to create the perfect childhood.

Instead, you’ll discover simple practices that cultivate presence.

You’ll find stories worth telling again and again.

Ideas for bringing a corner of the forest onto your nature table.

Handmade puppets stitched with care.

Verses that become part of the rhythm of your days.

Recipes shared around the family table.

Moments that invite children not merely to consume the world, but to participate in it.

One of the greatest gifts we can offer young children is not constant entertainment, but a world worthy of their imagination.

Stories become bridges between generations.

Puppet plays become little sanctuaries of wonder.

A basket of pinecones gathered on an afternoon walk becomes treasure.

Fresh bread cooling on the counter becomes a lesson in patience.

A candle lit at dusk quietly reminds us that even the smallest light can transform a room.

These ordinary moments become the substance of childhood.

And perhaps, if we’re paying attention, they become the substance of our own healing as well.

The Living Year is as much for the grown-up as it is for the child.

As we accompany children through the seasons, we often find ourselves rediscovering forgotten parts of our own hearts—the part that still delights in birdsong before breakfast, that still marvels at the first snowfall, that still believes stories carry truths too deep for explanation.

Children invite us back into wonder.

This publication is an invitation to accept that invitation.

Whether you are a parent, grandparent, teacher, homeschooler, caregiver, or simply someone who believes that childhood deserves beauty and reverence, I hope you will find companionship here.

Each month we will walk through the seasons together.

We will tell stories.

Create with our hands.

Celebrate festivals.

Observe the changing landscape.

Learn from timeless fairy tales.

Build tiny worlds for puppet plays.

Practice the quiet art of paying attention.

Because when we begin living with the seasons instead of merely passing through them, something remarkable happens.

The year no longer feels like twelve pages on a calendar.

It becomes a living companion.

A trusted teacher.

A gentle guide.

Welcome to The Living Year.

I’m so grateful you’re here.

Let’s step into the seasons together.
